Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a menstrual cup user?

When I first saw a menstrual cup on the shelf at our local coop I was intrigued but also had a lot of questions. I had never actually met anyone that openly used any kind of reusable period product. I was curious but also had a lot of questions.

In the spirit of exposing the hidden world of menstrual cup usage I thought it might be helpful to share a little bit about my journey as a menstrual cup user just in case you, like me, don't know anyone else talking about this stuff.

Let’s do this!

A Day In The Life

My period started today. My period generally starts out pretty light and gets heavier throughout the week. What about yours?

Lots of blood will need to be collected throughout the day so I take my menstrual cup out of its cute little bag and sterilize it in boiling water. I let it cool down before I pop it in.

Once my menstrual cup is inside I can't feel it.

To backtrack a little I’ll let you in on a little secret. Initially, I couldn't figure out how to use my menstrual cup. Thankfully there are good videos on the web nowadays that provided all of the guidance you need. If you're wondering how to get your menstrual cup in this video might help.

Is It Overflowing

I uneventfully go about my workday. As it is a light day, I know now that I don’t need to change my cup for the whole day. If this was one of my heavier days, I would usually change my cup at around 1 o'clock.

My routine is to take it out and empty it in the toilet. I give it a quick rinse in the sink and wash it with soap and water. No one seems to notice or care. If I want to be more discreet, I wet some hand paper before going into the stall and use that to wipe my cup. Then I just give it a good wash when I take it out later at home.

12 Hours of Protection

I get home and the rush of our evening starts. Family time is in motion. Supper needs to be cooked. A quick jog needs to happen.

Bedtime rolls around and I realize I should probably empty my menstrual cup before watching a little Netflix to end my day. Sometimes I find that the cup is so comfortable that it’s easy to forget that it’s there. I’ve taken to setting an alarm to go off morning and night just as a reminder to change it!

That's pretty much it. As you can see a day in the life of a menstrual cup user is super basic.

Thinking About Becoming a Menstrual Cup User?

Obviously, since I'm writing to you on this platform, you'd guess I'm going to tell you that the nixit menstrual cup is my favorite. But it's the truth. It is the easiest, comfiest, and least noticeable cup I've tried.

Over the years I've spent a lot of time looking at graphics on Pinterest trying to figure out which menstrual cup would work best for me. It was such a relief when I found this one. But you are not me so I would encourage you to read reviews and learn about your options before making the decision that's best for you.

One last thing, don't be afraid to tell your friends if you try one! They might be curious about menstrual cups too. By using a menstrual cup and openly sharing your experience you are generously helping the environment. creating a movement around reducing waste in landfills. Not to mention helping your friends and family save a little money.

Look at you, doing your part!
